What is a Brokerage Fee?
It's a fee that is charged by the courier company that is delivering your package. For example:
You order a product by mailorder from the USA. The package is shipped using either FEDEX or UPS courier services. They ship the package through the nearest Canadian border crossing. When crossing the border there is paperwork to complete and duty fees to be paid. The courier will complete all of this for you; it's called 'Brokering' your package. The courier is being your customs broker. For this service, they charge a fee.
If you go to the US to pickup your package, you will avoid paying this fee. Brokerage fees are calculated based on the total price of the order. Click Here for a complete list of Brokerage Fees charged by UPS. |

What is Duty?
Also known as a Tariff, this is a fee charged by the Canadian Government. There are different duty fees depending on what the item is and where it was made. Here are the duty fees that apply to the BMX market:

- 13% Frames
- 8.5% Wheels
- 18% Shoes
- 18% Clothing (t-shirts, hoodies, hats, jeans, etc.)
These duty fees are charged at the border when crossing into Canada. Whether you are shipping something across the border or bringing it back yourself, you will have to pay these duty fees.
There are some exceptions:
If you are in the US for 24 hours, you can bring back $50 worth of merchandise without paying duty or tax. If you are in the US for 48 hours, you can bring back $200 worth of merchandise without paying duty or tax. If you are in the US for 7 days, you can bring back $750 worth of merchandise without paying duty or tax. |
